These books are all good-they have excellent articles at the beginning, mostly good descriptions including composer information, composition information, historical perspective, technical consideration, stylistic considerations, musical elements, form and structure, suggested listening, additional references and resources. Once in a while the analysis is not so good, but these books are a great resource! The cd set is nice to hear the works as well if you're planning ahead and picking out music for next year.
Best Music for Beginning Band by Thomas l. Dvorak and Richard L. Floyd; soft cover published by Manhattan Beach music—this is a good repertoire list separating Grade 1 into introductory, intermediate, and advanced pieces. Gives highest written note for clarinets and brass-helpful! There is typically a one short page description of piece of music.
